Dr. Paul Coussens

Dr. Coussens received his bachelor of science degree in biochemistry and mathematics from Northern Michigan University in 1980, transferring to the University of Maine at Orono where he earned a master's degree in physical chemistry in 1982. Dr. Coussens then attended Pennsylvania State University where he studied retroviruses and oncogenes and became skilled in molecular biology and protein analysis. Dr. Coussens earned his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1985. Following a brief post-doctoral study of the src oncogene protein at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Dr. Coussens returned to his native Michigan to study molecular virology at Michigan State University (MSU).

Dr. Michael Ott

As an authority in experimental hepatology (the study of liver function and disease) and highly-innovative liver cell transplantation procedures for human patients suffering from acute liver failure, Dr. Michael Ott brings unique expertise to HepaLife in the areas of adult and embryonic stem cell research as well as gene expression in fetal liver and hepatic progenitor cells.

Dr. Michael Ott is Associate Professor for Experimental Hepatology at the Hannover Medical School, recognized worldwide as one of the leading centers for transplantation medicine.

Mr. Frank Menzler, Dipl-Ing (MSc)

Mr. Menzler holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Northwestern University’s, Kellogg School of Business and a ‘Diplom-Ingenieur’ (Master’s of Science equivalent) in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering from RWTH Aachen, Germany’s largest university of technology and one of Europe’s leading technology institutions, renowned for its standards of education and research excellence since 1870.

Dr. Darryl J. Fleishman

Dr. Darryl J. Fleishman brings over a decade of direct medical experience with emergency-room patients suffering from liver disease and acute liver failure as well as those injured by adverse drug effects to the liver.

Drug-induced liver damage, also known as hepatotoxicity, has become increasingly frequent and is now the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases). According to the National Institutes of Health, up to 5% of the nation’s 100 million-plus hospital admissions can be attributed to adverse drug reactions.
